Explore Milly-la-Forêt

A diverse cultural heritage

Milly-la-Forêt is located only 20 km from the campsite and is the ideal place to explore and enjoy the region’s landscapes. Up until the 18th century, Milly was a large agricultural centre and hosted an important Parisian fair as it was an important stop on the road between Paris and Lyon. But since it was neither on the modern road nor railway networks, it lost its importance, only to regain it in the 19th century with the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants. In the middle of the 20th century, it became a popular resort for artists because it is situated so close to Paris (55 km). Here you could meet Jean Cocteau, Dior, Jean Tinguely, Niki de Saint-Phalle among others. These artists contributed to the regeneration of the town – Today it is an important tourist centre for the region. Since 1999, it is a part of the regional nature park Gâtinais. The tour takes you through the National Plant Conservatory, the Saint-Blaise des Simples Chapel, the Jean Cocteau House, or the church Notre Dame de l‘Assomption. Do not forget to pay a visit to the Cyclopes, a mythological creature that lives in the heart of the forest of Milly. This gigantic sculptural work is made of concrete and metal and is partially covered with mirrors. It was designed by Jean Tinguely and is as tall as a seven-story building!

Sports enthusiasts can go to Atout-branches – a ropes course, where visitors (ages 2 and up) can follow panoramic routes in the tree tops (up to 18 meters high), riddle routes, take part in a treasure hunt or an escape game in the forest.
